On a cold Friday morning we had a using texture in painting workshop. We started by looking at works by Antoni Tapies, one of Spains important mixed media artists. His work is abstract, impactful and he uses a lot of textures and different materials. Having taken inspiration from his works we headed to the courtyard for the practical work. A table was set out with all the materials we were going to be using. Piotr gave us a lowdown on what every material did and what all we could use. Then, we started; we mixed, glues, found objects, used gigantic portions of plaster, sand, marble dust, stones pigments and just had fun on pieces of wood! The only thing was that because the white glue takes about 2 weeks to dry we wont be able to see our masterpieces just yet. But, we also did a huge board of an abstract texture piece. Where everyone worked on it together and maybe produced an ‘Antoni Tapies’?

Workshop- Screen Printing
Well, one of the most awaited workshop is always the 3 class screen printing workshop. The first class we were shown videos on the process and the names and the kinds of techniques within screen-printing. We also had a look at famous artists works like Andy Warhol who worked a lot with silkscreen.
For the next class we had images ready, printed on transparencies, all black and white. The images ranged from a created motifs, photographs of people, birds, a story page, space, Arabic writing, flamenco dresses, everything. Then came the exposing of the screen, the washing, the drying and finally the printing! Was a great way to get your own design on different papers and even cloth? Many of the students printed their images on t-shirts and the result was cool. More pictures of work to follow.

Did you have any art education before you came to Metafora?
I was always in summer art classes as a child; my mother was a genetics professor from a family of artists. I took up a course in photography after high school, and studied illustration at the Art Students League of New York. I also work as a graphic designer.
What form of art interests you these days? Or what are you working on these days?
I'm a scientist by training, so I get a lot of material from fields like molecular biology, neuroscience, and physics. I really like merging the two together. But I'm also interested in children's book illustration, origami and pop-ups. Right now I'm doing a stained glass installation of the cerebral cortex for my Babel Tower project.

My work
The first pic is of one of my only 'paintings,' a combination of a doll, a plastic monster, bottle caps, polyester stuffing, some housepaint, and a metal screen. It was in a group show commemorating the first 100 women and girls who died in Nicaragua as a result of the complete ban on abortion. The second is of my dog Benedicto getting to know Sants!
Presentations Galore!
Well, every week on Mondays we have an afternoon assembly where everyone is present and we talk about the coming week, announcements, what is there to do in Barcelona, art galleries, events and most importantly a student presentation. For every assemble one student gives a presentation on his or her work/ artists they admire/ artists from their country or art from their country/city/town. This month we had a lot of interesting presentations.
It started with Axel Brechensbauer, who is from Sweden, he showed us the kind of work he was doing before he came to Barcelona. It was business and industrial design with a strong concept. He showed us presentations of pitches for clients and the final production of the idea. It was very interesting and impressive. Then came Maria Laursen who is from Denamrk, who did more of a performance piece for her presentation. She walked around barefoot, picking our brains on female and male art, is there any differentiations, how do we know. She also showed us work of an artist from Denmark whose work she really likes. Then came Jessica Hirst who is from United States of America but been working in Nicaragua for the last few years. She did a performance piece too as a working executive at a business firm whose come for a presentation to talk business and show profits. The presentaion was on the work she and her partner had been doing with the people of Nicaragua under the name of Palmer Fishman Industries. They made things out of trash/garbage into useful products, selling them, having events, performances to make Nicaragua people and outside aware of situations in Nicaragua. All in all each presentation was different and great.
More presentations to follow! Be ready!
